    Zur Klassifikation der Geldtheorie

    Zur Klassifikation der Geldtheorie

Ludwig von Mises · 5 sections

Either a theory of money folds into the general theory of exchange, or it explains nothing—this is the fault line Mises draws between catallactic and acatallactic doctrines. Acatallactic theories ground money in metal, in state command, or in analogies to blood, language, and law; catallactic theories integrate it into price formation and subjective value. From that standpoint he prosecutes Knapp's state theory of money for producing formal histories of laws and decrees while saying nothing of purchasing power, wages, or prices. He corrects the polemical label metallism, denying that Smith and Ricardo were naive metallists—Smith defended replacing gold with paper, Ricardo proposed removing coin from domestic circulation—and faults Wieser and Philippovich for absorbing Knapp's errors into the history of monetary thought.

English translation: “A monetary theory thought through to the end must issue in a theory of exchange; therewith it ceases to be acatallactic.”

Nation, Staat und Wirtschaft: Beiträge zur Politik und Geschichte der Zeit

Nation, Staat und Wirtschaft: Beiträge zur Politik und Geschichte der Zeit

Ludwig von Mises · 26 sections

Written in the wreckage of military defeat and revolution, these reflections refuse the search for villains: Mises wants to understand how the catastrophe came, not to apportion guilt. Nationality, he argues, rests neither on race nor descent nor residence but on language, so national struggles are at bottom struggles over the culture tongue; liberal nationalism, pacifist and grounded in self-determination, curdles into militant imperialism only where mixed-language populations turn majority rule into the domination of minorities. He traces German and Habsburg anti-democracy to precisely these conditions, dissects war socialism as a mere acceleration of prewar statism, shows how inflation veils the consumption of capital, and closes by urging a defeated Germany to abandon revanchism and return to the rationalist liberalism of 1789.

English translation: “Whoever wants peace among peoples must combat statism.”

    Die Wirtschaftsrechnung im sozialistischen Gemeinwesen

    Die Wirtschaftsrechnung im sozialistischen Gemeinwesen

Ludwig von Mises · 9 sections

Abolish private ownership of the means of production, Mises argues, and you abolish the market prices of producer goods along with it—and without money prices there is no common denominator by which a planning authority can weigh one production method against another. This 1920 essay, which opened the socialist calculation debate, grants that a socialist commonwealth could still let consumers exchange and even use money for consumption goods, but insists that subjective use value cannot be measured and that labor cannot serve as a unit, since labor is heterogeneous and ignores scarce material inputs. State and municipal enterprises only appear calculable because they float within a surrounding market. Technical efficiency, he concludes, is not economic rationality: deprived of calculation, socialist production must grope in the dark.

Sozialismus ist Aufhebung der Rationalität der Wirtschaft.

English translation: “Socialism is the abolition of rational economy.”

    Die geldtheoretische Seite des Stabilisierungsproblems

    Die geldtheoretische Seite des Stabilisierungsproblems

Ludwig von Mises · 10 sections

Once the public stops believing that the inflation will halt, Mises contends, a paper currency financed by the note press is doomed to sudden collapse rather than to endless gradual decline—as the American continentals and the French mandats collapsed before it. The first step of any reform is therefore to shut down the printing press; the second is to bind the mark again to gold, whose quantity answers to mining profitability rather than to state decree. He refutes the balance-of-payments theory of the exchanges, insisting that inflation, not poverty or trade deficits, drives foreign-exchange rates upward, and proposes a monetary constitution forbidding any note issue not covered by gold or foreign exchange. The disorder, he closes, is at root ideological.

English translation: “In place of the slogan "Away from gold" must be substituted the solution: "Away from state influence on the value of money.”

Neue Beiträge zum Problem der sozialistischen Wirtschaftsrechnung

Neue Beiträge zum Problem der sozialistischen Wirtschaftsrechnung

Ludwig von Mises · 2 sections

Every socialist scheme founders on the same rock, the impossibility of economic calculation, and this sequel to the 1920 essay takes up the objections against that thesis one by one. Mises works through Arthur Wolfgang Cohn's revival of Schäffle's administratively fixed Sozialtaxe, Karl Polányi's guild-socialist functionalism, and Eduard Heimann's cost-based pricing, showing that each must collapse either into central planning, where calculation admittedly fails, or into syndicalism, where associations trade as owners and socialism dissolves. He then turns on the Soviet and Marxist replies of Tschajanow, Strumilin, Varga, and Kautsky, arguing that inherited capitalist prices, labor-time reckoning, and the reduction of heterogeneous labor all break down against scarce natural factors. No socialist, he concludes, has yet produced a workable method of calculation.

English translation: “One was permitted to extol socialism, but one was not permitted to think about it.”

    Antimarxismus

    Antimarxismus

Ludwig von Mises · 5 sections

A movement can declare war on Marxism while remaining as anticapitalist as the doctrine it fights: this is the paradox Mises anatomizes in republican Germany and German-Austria. Scientific anti-Marxism, he argues, attacks Marxist politics while keeping Marxist categories intact, above all class conflict, resentment against capitalism, and contempt for theoretical economics. Tracing how the Historical School and Kathedersozialismus absorbed Marxian ideas even while claiming to refute them, he sets a utilitarian sociology of the division of labor against every struggle theory, whether of class, race, or nation, faulting them for explaining conflict but never association. Werner Sombart serves as the exemplary critic still caught inside the doctrine he renounces. Only science, not nationalist ressentiment, can overcome Marxism. First published 1925.

English translation: “Note well: it is not socialism that is attacked, but Marxism, and Marxist socialism is reproached for not being the correct, the true, the only socialism worth striving for.”

Preistaxen: I. Theorie (reprinted as Theorie der Preistaxen)

Preistaxen: I. Theorie (reprinted as Theorie der Preistaxen)

Ludwig von Mises · 4 sections

Not whether the state can decree a price, but what follows when a decreed price is meant to replace the one the market would form: that is the question this theoretical essay on official price fixing pursues within an order still based on private ownership. Mises distinguishes Ordnungstaxen, which hover near the market price and barely disturb it, from genuine controls that push maximum or minimum prices away from the unhampered level. A ceiling breeds shortage, hoarding, rationing, and finally compulsory production; a wage floor breeds unsold labor. Each isolated intervention forces a choice between retreat and further command. Price fixing, he concludes, is no stable third system between capitalism and socialism but cumulative social theory. Reprinted as Theorie der Preistaxen.

English translation: “The officially fixed price, however, destroys the market on which goods and services are bought and sold for money.”

    Interventionismus

    Interventionismus

Ludwig von Mises · 8 sections

After Bolshevik Russia retreated to the New Economic Policy, Mises saw the practical economics of the age settle on a regulated private-property order, neither laissez-faire nor outright expropriation. That third system is his target. Interventionism keeps ownership formal while replacing entrepreneurial calculation with isolated commands, and those commands, he argues, defeat their own ends: a price ceiling below the market breeds shortage, rationing, and finally compulsory production; a legislated or union-enforced wage above productivity turns frictional unemployment into a permanent institution. Corruption and evasion become structural supports rather than accidents. The postwar depression, on this reading, is not the crisis of capitalism but the crisis of interventionism, an order with no economic principle of its own, forced always to retreat or to advance toward socialism.

English translation: “Either capitalism or socialism; there is no middle way.”

    Sozialliberalismus

    Sozialliberalismus

Ludwig von Mises · 9 sections

The label social liberalism promised a synthesis; Mises reads it instead as an equivocal name for anti-liberal intervention. Framed as a review of the Brentano Festgabe, the essay treats that volume as evidence that Kathedersozialismus and the Historical School have exhausted their scientific content while keeping their political influence. His wedge is ownership of the means of production: liberalism, socialism, and syndicalism are rival institutional arrangements, not moral temperaments, and property as immediate control over production is indivisible. He counts the Methodenstreit settled against the historicists, denies that unions can raise labor's income as a whole by force without cost, and portrays Max Weber breaking painfully from Prussian statism toward liberal conclusions. Socialism, he insists, foundered not on resistance but on its own impracticability.

Nationalökonomische Erkenntnis führt notwendigerweise zum Liberalismus.

English translation: “Economic understanding leads necessarily to liberalism.”

    Geldwertstabilisierung und Konjunkturpolitik

    Geldwertstabilisierung und Konjunkturpolitik

Ludwig von Mises · 16 sections

Interwar enthusiasm for monetary planning fixed on two dreams: a money of stable purchasing power and a capitalism cleansed of the business cycle. Both exaggerate what policy can know and do. Purchasing power, Mises argues, cannot be measured objectively, since every index imports arbitrary weights, so Fisher's compensated dollar and Keynes's managed currency rest on pseudo-measurement. Gold he defends not as stable but as comparatively shielded from political hands. The second half builds the circulation-credit theory of the Konjunkturzyklus: bank-created fiduciary media push the loan rate below the natural rate, financing production that real saving cannot complete, so the crisis only reveals capital already misdirected. Cycles recur because opinion demands cheap money; his austere remedy extends the Currency School's rule to deposits and abandons the illusion that banking technique can conjure prosperity.

English translation: “Only business-cycle theory enables us to discern, amid the confused abundance of events, the wave-motion of the cycle.”

    Verstaatlichung des Kredits?

    Verstaatlichung des Kredits?

Ludwig von Mises · 5 sections

Robert Deumer's prize-winning blueprint for a state monopoly of credit takes nationalization as settled and worries only over its institutional design; Mises attacks the premise instead. Behind the plan lies the belief that private banks finance merely profitable rather than nationally necessary industries, a contrast he dissolves by converting the question of credit allocation into one of consumer sovereignty, since profit expresses the demand of consumers, not the whim of bankers. A nationalized bank, he argues, could never be run commercially: commercial management is inseparable from private ownership, profit-and-loss responsibility, and monetary calculation, so bureaucracy would follow not from bad officials but from the absence of any profitability test. Freed from redemption, such a bank would inflate on political command. Credit nationalization thus approaches full socialization, a late relic of an exhausted statism.

English translation: “One can never "commercialize" a state enterprise, no matter how many external features of private enterprise one transfers to it.”

Die Ursachen der Wirtschaftskrise: Ein Vortrag

Die Ursachen der Wirtschaftskrise: Ein Vortrag

Ludwig von Mises · 10 sections

Delivered as a lecture in 1931 amid the deepening Depression, this eight-part address moves from the nature of the market through the business cycle to unemployment, price supports, taxation, and gold. The market, Mises insists, is no anarchy but a form of economic democracy in which consumers, as the final authority, direct production. Crisis appears when policy disables that mechanism: bank credit expansion drives the loan rate below the natural rate, building a boom on sand, while union wages held above market-clearing levels, sustained by unemployment relief, turn joblessness chronic. Price supports for coffee and wheat, protective tariffs, and capital-consuming taxation deepen the disorder. The single way out, he argues, is to abandon every attempt to prevent market prices from shaping production.

English translation: “The capitalist market economy is a democracy in which every penny casts a vote.”
