    Method and subject matter mutually determine one another: define the economy as a system of means for ends, as causal regularity, or as functional relation, and you have already chosen a different object. That thesis governs this study of how pure economics can be scientific, appearing here in its third edition of 1948—delayed, its preface records, by the author's arrest, imprisonment, and dismissal from his teaching post.     What divides this presentation from Stackelberg's popular textbook is method, not subject matter: modern theory, Amonn insists, must be learned as a mode of reasoning rather than gathered as a heap of results. He builds from supply and demand as functional relations through equilibrium and market price to monopoly, duopoly, and the imperfect competition of Joan Robinson and Chamberlin, grounding demand in marginal utility and supply in subjective cost. He rejects the marginal-productivity theory of factor values as circular, substituting his own principle that product prices must be differentiated by the quantities of factors each good requires, and derives wage, interest, and rent from it. The argument runs on through money and the quantity theory, business cycles, and comparative costs to a welfare doctrine that weighs competition's productive power against the inequality it breeds.

    A demand curve, in ordinary teaching, is a path along which buyers slide as prices change. That picture is the error Morgenstern sets out to dismantle. The curve, he argues, is first a schedule of mutually exclusive intentions at a single moment — alternative maximum bids, not a record of successive purchases. Once a buyer actually transacts, expenditure and possession change, and the remaining points no longer mean what they did; a one-variable curve is valid for exactly one transaction unless it is reconstructed through a fresh reaction function. Elasticity, price discrimination, monopolistic competition, and the cobweb theorem all inherit the flaw. What begins as immanent critique of Marshall and Schultz becomes a bridge toward a game-theoretic view of markets as strategic situations that shift with every trade.

    Another person enters my field and looks at me: the world that was arranged around me reorganizes around a point of view not my own, and I become an object capable of shame. Reconstructing Jean-Paul Sartre's theory of intersubjectivity, Schütz treats it as separable from existentialism and grants it real power—the gaze, being-for-the-Other, the three dimensions of the lived and objectified body, and the critiques of Husserl, Hegel, and Heidegger whose anonymous Mitsein never reaches the concrete Peter or Anny. Yet Sartre's brilliance ends, he argues, in a practical solipsism: an opposition of subject and object that leaves either me objectified by the Other or the Other objectified by me, and no genuine subject-to-subject relation between them. Against the keyhole scene Schütz sets speech, where Peter's speaking presupposes Paul's listening—the mutual tuning-in Sartre's philosophy cannot house.

    For decades socialism was argued as a question of justice, distribution, and whether citizens would supply the needed virtue—never as a question of whether central direction could actually work. Recovering the distinction between the economic problem, allocating scarce means among rival ends, and the merely technical problem of achieving one given end, Hayek shows that even wholly loyal officials would still confront the need to compare competing uses of resources, a comparison capitalism performs through prices no single mind computes. He traces the long eclipse of this insight through the historical school's suspicion of abstraction and Marxism's faith in historical inevitability, then through marginal utility theory to Mises's decisive claim: without money prices for the means of production, a planning authority has no rational way to calculate at all.

    THERE is reason to believe that we are at last entering an era of reasoned discussion of what has long uncritically been assumed to be a reconstruction of society on rational lines.

    Criticism had, by 1935, already forced socialists to confront a sharper problem than justice or ownership: whether a planned economy can rationally compare the countless uses of scarce resources without markets in the means of production. Reviewing Barone's simultaneous equations, the mathematical proposals of Taylor, Roper, and Dickinson, and the Soviet record read through Brutzkus, Hayek concedes the formal conceivability of a socialist optimum and then dissolves it into an argument about knowledge. The equations would demand concrete, shifting, particular facts—qualities, locations, methods, transport, changing demand—dispersed among managers, traders, and workers and never gathered in one board's head. Impressive Soviet construction, he warns, may mark waste rather than success, since output alone proves nothing about whether resources were economically used.

    The breakdown of “war communism” occurred for exactly the same reasons, the impossibility of rational calculation in a moneyless economy, which Professors Mises and Brutzkus had foreseen.

    Market socialism arrived as a concession: Lange, Taylor, and Dickinson would keep state ownership yet let a central board set producer-good prices, instruct managers to equate marginal cost with price, and revise figures by trial and error as shortages and surpluses appeared. Hayek treats the maneuver as a mistaking of a static equilibrium model for a living process. Real economic life is ceaseless change—local scarcities, new methods, altered demand, particular machines and contracts—and by the time reports reach the authority and fresh prices issue, the relevant conditions have moved. His socialist manager, forbidden to undercut, speculate, or bid resources away, becomes a rule-following functionary who innovates only by persuading his superiors in advance, while central control of investment quietly restores the planning it claimed to escape.

    If this will not lead to the worst forms of bureaucracy, I do not know what will.

    Peace among formerly sovereign states, this 1939 essay argues, cannot rest on political or military union alone; it requires a genuine common market, and that market quietly disarms the interventionist state. Once goods, people, and capital move freely across internal borders, no member government can prop up local prices, shelter a monopoly, or sustain a restriction scheme dependent on territorial control—and, Hayek adds, the federation itself cannot easily replace those powers, because a large heterogeneous people will not agree on whose industries deserve protection. Economic planning presupposes a shared scale of values that diversity denies. Socialism becomes the limiting case: incompatible with free movement within, and lacking the common purpose a socialist union would require. Federation thus emerges as both a peace project and a liberal constraint, with Robbins and Streit in view.

    The whole armory of marketing boards and other forms of monopolistic organizations of individual industries will cease to be at the disposal of state governments.

    A charm may shape conduct even when the observer denies it has any power, for what matters is not the physical object but the purpose someone imputes to it. On this footing Hayek defends the interpretive social sciences against the scientism he knew from within, having trained in Mach and logical positivism. The facts of economics, law, and linguistics are teleological concepts: we grasp an action by analogy with our own mind, fitting movement into patterns of purpose rather than reducing it to behavior. Social theory, he argues, is 'compositive,' assembling models of wholes like markets and states from intelligible individual conduct—and it stands logically prior to history, since no historian can bound a fact like a battle or a legal order by space and time alone.

    In short, in the social sciences the things are what people think they are. Money is money, a word is a word, a cosmetic is a cosmetic, if and because somebody thinks they are.

    Perfect competition, as the textbooks model it, assumes away nearly everything ordinary language means by competing: with homogeneous goods, complete knowledge, and prices already adjusted, there is nothing left to discover. Hayek's reversal is to treat rivalry as a dynamic process rather than a static end-state—the very means by which costs, consumer wants, and better substitutes come to be known. Advertising, undercutting, product differentiation, and reputation, dismissed by theory as imperfections, are for him the substance of competition and the ways buyers economize on ignorance. The right test of a market is therefore not its distance from an unattainable ideal but whether it improves on what would exist if competition were blocked by licensing or price-fixing. Competition, he concludes, is a process for forming opinion and spreading dispersed knowledge.

    The practical lesson of all this, I think, is that we should worry much less about whether competition in a given case is perfect and worry much more whether there is competition at all.

    Between a rise in commodity prices and money wages that lag behind it lies a mechanism Hayek retrieves from Ricardo and sets at the center of capital and cycle theory. When labor grows cheaper relative to selling prices, the methods that pay are not the long, roundabout, machine-intensive ones but the quick-turnover processes that recover and reinvest their outlays fast—so a boom in consumer demand can perversely reduce demand for capital goods as firms work old plant harder, postpone replacement, and shift toward circulating capital. Reworking the wage-price relation through rates of turnover and internal rates of return, Hayek argues against treating the interest rate as the sole determinant of technique, and shows how credit expansion, once incomes and prices rise, pulls resources back toward shorter processes and throws the capital-goods trades into unemployment.

    The economic problem of society, on Hayek's recasting, is not how a single mind might allocate resources it already knows, but how to make use of knowledge that no one possesses in full—dispersed, local, changing, and often tacit. Planning is not the issue, since every actor plans; the question is whether planning is centralized in one authority or divided among the many who hold knowledge of the particular circumstances of time and place. The price system is his answer: prices condense relative scarcities into signals that let people economize and substitute without grasping the underlying cause, as when a distant shortage of tin quietly prompts users everywhere to conserve it. Markets thus figure as epistemic institutions, a species of spontaneous order alongside language and law, and the socialist calculation debate turns on the impossibility of gathering that knowledge in one directing mind.

    Or, to put it briefly, it is a problem of the utilization of knowledge which is not given to anyone in its totality.
